A renovation of the Gallery of 19th Century Polish Art in Sukiennice, which began in 2006, has finally been completed. The project, co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Social Committee for Historical Sites Renovation and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism, was one oft he biggest conservation projects in Europe and it consumed over EUR 8,700,000.
A thorough renovation of Sukiennice provided the Gallery with a totally new character – now it looks like in 19th century, again has plush sofas, palms and original wall colours. On the other hand, thanks to its modern equipment, interactive presentation and the use of multimedia this is the gallery of the 21st century. There are also „artomats“ here – computers with touch screens where one can get to know the history of Sukiennice, the oeuvre of the Gallery and its artists, as well as play games or quizes, which will surely be interesting for children and teenagers. In 4 halls with new names there will be 195 paintings and 19 sculptures of the most outstanding Polish artists. On 24th July there will be a festive completion of the project and a date of the Gallery opening will be announced. The first visitors will enter Sukiennice as soon as in September.
