Court Dance developed in Renaissance because before, in Middle Ages, it was criticized for being highly immoral and dangerous. European aristocracy including rulers danced “balli” and “balletti” which were becoming increasingly popular. Talented female dancers included Catherine de’Medici and Bona Sforza, among men Louis the 14th , the Sun King, was a distinguished dancer, who liked to pretend gods and heroes.
The Court Dance Festival, which shows the beauty of historical dances to the modern audience, is a unique event of this type in Europe. Court Dances, music and etiquette are presented in historical places of Krakow – in Barbican, on the arcaded courtyard of Wawel or in Villa Decius. Consequently, the audience better feels the atmosphere of old times.
Every edition of the festival has its own leitmotif. This year organizers decided to refer to the celebrations of the Indian Year in Poland, therefore the title of the 9th Cracovia Danza is “Court Dance in Countries of the Orient.” It will be possible to see the show entitled “Poland – India: Conversations,” performances of Kathak Dance Group “Dhwani” and an exhibition: “Indian Motifs in European Ballets”. Apart from this, it will be possible to participate in Indian Dance workshops. The workshops in Villa Decius will also be be held in English, French and of course Polish court dance. There will be some special classes only for children as well.
The Festival will last 8 days from 2nd to 10th August. On 9th August, Saturday, a traditional ball will take place on the Market Square. Everyone is welcome to come and take part in it!
